What will you catch during a day of Galveston Bay fishing?
Galveston Bay is home to an extensive variety of fish from black drum and sheepshead to red snapper and mahi-mahi, both on the bayside and along the Gulf. For Clear Lake anglers, there are three specifically that draw their attention the most.
Fishing for redfish in Galveston Bay
Catch these beautiful copper-tinged fish along the inshore shallows near flats and structure, as they glide through Texas shoal grass, plucking up morsels with an appetite for most anything. Redfish are commonly caught in the range of 20 to 28 inches in length, some grow to be much larger, but they’ll all give you a pound-for-pound fight as they smack everything from bouncing soft baits on a jig to bursting from the surf for a topwater lure.
Redfish love live shrimp, crab, mullet, and pinfish. Captain Allen Welch, one-half of the experienced crew guiding Clear Lake Fishing Charters, talked about his standard go-to baits on the Bay:
“I like to keep it simple and effective—live shrimp and paddle tails are my go-to baits. They’re versatile and consistently produce results, especially when targeting speckled trout and redfish.”

Texas anglers fishing in Galveston Bay are rewarded with fierce hits from a fish lesser in size than some of its gamefish counterparts, but will give you every bit of the aggressiveness. The rewards don’t always stop at just having a good time: The Coastal Conservation Association’s State of Texas Angler’s Rodeo (STAR) Tournament goes on all summer, includes Texas coastal waters like Galveston Bay, and awards incredible prizes, like a 2025 Ford F-150 XLT SuperCrew Cab trailing a 23-foot Haynie Amigo on a Coastline trailer. All you’ve got to do is find those tagged redfish.
Galveston Bay fishing for Speckled Trout
Speckled trout make for delicious delicacies to bring home for dinner. Fishermen can catch trout throughout the bay inshore, even in the deeper parts along the sandy bottoms. In the summertime, the bay water reaches temperatures in the upper 70s and 80s drawing prey species, thus attracting predatory fish like trout. With plenty of food to snack on, trout stay in the area for the season, creating plenty of opportunities for anglers to reel in this delicious fish.
Captain Welch described areas he’s drawn to when seeking hot spots on Galveston Bay:
“I tend to focus on structure – points, boat docks, and drop-offs are all productive areas. These spots naturally attract fish, offering both shelter and steady food sources.”
Flounder fishing in Galveston Bay
If the Texas sun is too hot for you, go after flounder. Flounder are notoriously particular in their biting habits, being highly active during incoming tides and in lower-light conditions, like around dawn and in the evening. They make fishing excursions quite fun if you opt for flounder gigging at night.
Anglers can catch flounder any time of the year but veteran anglers and gigging enthusiasts on Galveston Bay consider peak season between October and December during the species’ fall migration. Flounder are ambush predators, so all anglers have to do is drift some delicious shrimp near a potential hiding hole just outside the current, and they may entice an opportunistic strike.

Where’s the best place when fishing in Galveston Bay?
From Galveston Bay, West Bay, East Bay, and Trinity Bay to offshore fishing spots along the Gulf Coast, there are plenty of options to fish – but where are the best?
Shore options are a bit far out from Clear Lake, but well worth the 30-mile trip. Seawolf Park, located on Pelican Island, is the closest to home and reportedly great for redfish and black drum. An added benefit of the park is the fishing cleaning stations and convenient bathrooms for the long days of fishing.
Anglers should also check out the historic 61st Street Fishing Pier and Galveston Fishing Pier – also great spots to catch redfish, black drum, and other fish like Spanish mackerel and blacktip sharks.
For most fishing excursions, the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department requires anglers over the age of 17 to register a fishing license, but at Galveston Island State Park, anglers are welcome to fish for redfish and speckled trout without a license. Register for a Texas fishing license here, if you plan to fish anywhere else.
Captain Welch of Clear Lake Fishing Charters had one final note of advice for those truly looking to have a blast fishing Galveston Bay:
“If you really want to make the most of your time on the water, consider fishing with an experienced guide. It’s not just about catching fish – it’s about learning the patterns, the tides, and how to read the bay.”
